Not only is he funky, my pink-bag-totting, bangle-wearing friend is now a mini-celebrity in his own right!
He was featured in yesterday's Sunday Times for his Four Million Frowns project - an idea he came up with 2 days after the smiles campaign kicked off.
So do check out his site and give him some face (pun intended), even though I'm sure the response must have been overwhelming since.
Clowning around with frowns
ST: Alan Lim HE started a Four Million Frowns project to poke fun at the government-led Four Million Smiles campaign, but Mr Matthew Teo (right, next to a smiles campaign poster) wants it to be known that he is not anti-establishment. 'I think 'cheeky' would be more appropriate,' he says, adding that he actually smiles a lot.
Mr Teo, a 19-year-old student from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts majoring in photography, was not impressed when the campaign was launched in June. 'It was too corporate and fake,' he says.
Two days after the smiles campaign kicked off, he set up a blog and invited Singaporeans to send their frowning or angry photographs to him. While the official version collates photographs into the shape of the Singapore island, Mr Teo arranges his to form the word 'frown'.
He wrote on the blog: 'Call it a parody, a chance to show your displeasure. Whatever. But don't take it too seriously. Just have fun while you are at it.'
His target is 400 photographs and he had hoped to do an exhibit at the end of it. But only over 90 photographs have been collected so far - barely enough to finish the letter 'r'. Half came from netizens, with his friends and classmates making up the rest. 'Maybe Singaporeans are scared that something will happen to them if they support my project,' he says. 'But I'm not worried as I'm not doing anything illegal.'
Ironically, the frowns displayed on his blog have brought on many smiles. 'People have told me they find the whole thing so ridiculous that they start laughing,' he says.
