Survival of the Fittest?

Seen on the news last night...

Men on board a hovering heli pushing out cartons of relief supplies to the victims of the tsunami disaster gathered down below, who immediately scurried forward - shoving against each other - to make a grab for it.
Much like fishes do when u toss a piece of bread into the water.
I'm not sure if that's really the best way to distribute food to the ppl. I mean, what abt the sick, the weak and the old? Will they be able to fight their way through? Did they send out more able-bodied representatives to snatch something back for them?

But ya, I understand from the papers that the treacherously muddy ground made landing impossible, so maybe this is as good as it gets.
